Based on a qualitative case study from rural British Columbia, we have developed the concept of “infrastructural autonomy” which supports an understanding of the relational and place-sensitive character of infrastructures.

Our argument is based on the assumption that place-sensitive onotlogical security requires adopting a subjective approach to infrastructure—“infrastructuring”—to reveal concealed insights into infrastructural needs.

In our articel, published in Canadian Geographies, we argue that counter to the modernist equation in which infrastructural development leads to greater well-being, individual and place-sensitive handlings of infrastructure may increase ontological security.
