I learned completely at school. Whatever they did, it worked.

Parents were refugees, mum's English wasn't great, never read to me not even once.

Honestly, the abdication of responsibility winds me up so much! I had a horrible time doing languages at school and spent years saying "I can't learn languages" "I hate MFL*" etc and bloody look at me now

Unlike teaching staff, they're hourly paid so you can't just pile on more work without also paying them for the time it takes!

Yes definitely. But there's clearly something amiss with the workload and commensurate pay scale of exams officers if they are refusing to take on even a small extra number of private candidates

We have a few ex students every year who do their exams at school privately. But I imagine a family who left on bad terms wouldn't be welcome!
