The Jewel Box is an open star cluster visible as a faint smudge with the naked eye under dark skies. It is located 6,440 light years away towards the constellation Crux, The Southern Cross. The first person to recognise it as a cluster of individual stars was Nicolas Louis de Lacaille during his visit to Cape Town in 1752. The name of the cluster originates from John Herschel's later observations in the 1830's, also from Cape Town, and his resulting vivid description: "A most vivid and beautiful cluster, though neither a large nor a rich one, is yet an extremely brilliant and beautiful object when viewed through an instrument of sufficient aperture to show distinctly the very different colour of its constituent stars, which give it the effect of a superb piece of fancy jewellery" The bright orange star in the centre of the cluster is known as Kappa Crucis. It provides a striking contrast with the rest of the hot blue cluster members. Although the cluster is a mere 14 million years young this star has already reached the red giant phase of its life and will most likely explode in a brilliant supernova within the next few million years. Looking out on a vast valley/saddle between two running sets of peaks and crags. Evergreen trees cover the mountainsides all around. Some large rocks and a little snow can also be seen. They sky is bright but mostly white clouds.

Beneath a deep blue desert sky with streaky white clouds we are standing atop a cracked and fractured pinkish violet rock looking down several hundred feet into a landscape of narrow shallow canyons and rock formations below. There are striations of color throughout: chalky white, blue gray, pinkish violet, brown. A scattering of olive green shrubs are the only signs of life in an otherwise barren scene.

I took advantage of a couple of clear nights at the end of November to photograph the spiral Galaxy NGC 7331 in the constellation of Pegasus. Despite the light pollution over Wolverhampton it’s not turned out too badly using just an infrared cut filter.

Taken last week during a walk with the dogs A ridge of dark evergreens rises in silhouette, its jagged tree line forming a quiet horizon against the sky. Above it, the evening (or dawn) light unfurls in sweeping bands of color—soft rose, coral, violet, and a cool wash of blue—layered like brushstrokes from a patient painter. The clouds drift in wide, gentle curves, glowing as if lit from within. The contrast is striking: the forested slope holds steady in deep shadow, while the sky above it blooms with radiant warmth.
