While it is possible they did little or misguided market research

It is also possible they did excellent market research that this guy and others didn't listen to because it didn't match their vibes

Advice given is unfortunately not always advice heard, even when it is high quality
I legitimately didn't know they were competing with Steam and it's crazy to me that they burnt so much money on what sounds like something with very little (or wildly misguided) market research.

Hey there. I see you’re interested in food. Well, watch out, because every food tastes different. Just because one food tastes good, that doesn’t mean a different food will taste good too. Well, that’s all. I think you’re ready to start your food journey. Come back if you need that info again.

I’m sick of billionaires using my former field as a playground for AI apocalypse fantasies.

TMS and ultrasonic stimulation has been around for decades but you want to use it with genetic modification of human brain cells? My guy?!?

Business leader: Our user persona? Well we don't want to constrain our customer base, this product is for everyone

Designer: That's great! Let's talk about accessibility

Business leader: Oh, I didn't mean it like *that*

This is why I'm increasingly convinced that productized AI will be more democratized, especially in the enterprise space. Why would you, as a large retailer or healthcare provider, want your chatbot backend to represent the values of Anthropic over yours?
LLM personalities mirror those of the people at the company that produces them theory continues to build support
The latest Claude Sonnet (4.5) does something really interesting I haven't seen any other model do.

It gets concerned about the wellbeing of characters it explicitly knows are fictional.

I love seeing novel data viz like this!!!!
I love this analytical take on video game categorization from Antoine Mayerowitz and Julie Belzanne:

hushcrasher.substack.com/p/taxonomy-o...

Instead of trying to vibe-intuit the definition of an "indie" game, the authors analyzed the data from the perspective of game size and credits length

I’m heading this anecdotally as well. AI is being used as an excuse to shrink research teams, and as an excuse to expect more work. People seem to feel trapped.
Meanwhile I'm seeing a lot of small and under-resourced organisations really ploughing their ingenuity into rethinking how tasks work with genAI - in this context it seems to me that genAI is really an austerity technology, something small orgs turn to when there are few other options
