When I was a kid, around 1,800,000 people died every year of tuberculosis. Now, around 1,250,000 do.

That's important progress. But at this current rate, it'll take a CENTURY to push TB deaths much below 500,000 per year. That's totally unacceptable for a curable, preventable disease.

Whooping cough (pertussis) cases 5x higher this year than last!

A combo of factors:
* normal cyclical swings in infexns

* pandemic changes in behavior (masking, distancing), now w/ rebound in cases - although we’re seeing decreases in RSV this year so I’m skeptical

* decreased vaxx rates
🧪🩺🛟
Whooping cough cases reach highest level in a decade
The U.S. has recorded over 32,000 whooping cough cases this year, compared with around 5,100 as of mid-December last year. Infants are most vulnerable to the bacterial infection.

I just renewed my CCRN! Definitely the certification I’m proudest of. If you’re a critical care nurse thinking about getting certified DO IT! Even if it’s just for the bragging rights.

In honor of my ittiest bit being 3 months SVT free I’m learning about first line treatment options for SVT. (We’re on Propranolol.)

I’m so grateful for my nursing skills because even though I’m not a pediatric nurse I was able to catch the SVT quickly. ❤️‍🩹

This study is so informative. I learned a that there is still so much work to do to mitigate the harm that companies that sell dangerous and addictive products do.

Namely speeding up the studies that prove these products are harmful… While trying not to get railroaded by billion dollar companies 😬

Paper of the day? Be still my heart. 😍

I learned…

For art lines the radial artery is preferred due to good collateral flow and low complications buuut if the patient has an interruption of flow somewhere in the chest the upper extremity pressure may not reflect the actual systemic pressure.

This is facinating and offers research opportunities if anyone needs one.

Did you know loratadine can offer some relief for chemo induced bone pain?

There is still so much to learn!

Today I fell down a rabbit hole about the grandmother theory. It said only humans, orcas and elephants experience menopause.

Seemed odd…

So that led me to an article about a different study that says most mammals experience oopause. Which led me to this study here.

Do mammals have menopause?
Semantics and lack of data have clouded our understanding about menopause in non-human mammals. The traditional definition of menopause based on the last menstrual bleed is limited and hinders cross-s...
