Shakespeare in Love still gets a short shrift from some quarters for beating Saving Private Ryan but I think it’s utterly joyous. The way it runs the gamut from Carry On… level gags to jokes about John Webster. And Tom Wilkinson’s wonderful arc.

Saw it again today for the (checks notes) 64th time. I adore it a little more each time. All the relationships feel absolutely real, even and especially Daulby’s brief scene with Alice, the perma-ciggie secretary. I love it utterly.

It’s a lovely idea for a film. Essentially, within a few diary entries, Stoker had written the plot of The Thing and set it aboard a ship. It will find a loyal audience, I’m quite sure.
