This is a heat emergency. Transport workers need your help urgently Mass leafleting from 11am Friday 18th July Meet us at Bus stop F Liverpool Street Station We will be leafleting members of the public asking them to contact TFL to demand they TURN ON the air cooling/con systems on the transport buses and trains, give additional break to drivers & ensure they have access to cool water.

Interesting to see motion A23, also passed at PCS conference, on the environmental impacts of AI.
DEFRA London and South East (001067) Conference notes the recent publication of the government's "Al Opportunities Action Plan" and proposals to scale up use of Al within the Public Sector. Whilst conference recognises the opportunities Al presents for improving the delivery of public services, it also notes that the Action Plan does not mention the resource impacts -particularly energy and water use and the extraction of rare minerals- related to the widespread use of this technology, or the potential impacts on civil service workforce planning. Initial assessments of the impacts of Al use on water and energy consumption suggest that a person engaging with an Al language model and having 10 to 50 responses drives the consumption of a half-litre of fresh water. The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects that data centres' electricity consumption in 2026 will be double that of 2022 - 1,000 terawatts, roughly equivalent to Japan's current total energy consumption. Conference instructs the incoming NEC to engage with government on the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of increased use of Al. This will require an assessment of the impacts of the introduction of this new technology on the job security of civil servants and on our ability to meet Greening Government commitments and legally mandated environmental targets, such as carbon budgets.
