York Castle: In accordance with a bequest made many years ago by some charitably disposed person, the debtors - in the Castle on Christmas Day were regaled with roast beef and plum pudding. The prison chapel bad been very tastefully decorated for the season, and there were 1/5

Produced by the Gas Council in the 1950s the leaflet "Christmas in the Happy Home" was, as you would imagine for the date, aimed at what is frequently termed the "housewife" Not one mention of anyone else, sharing in the work. No wonder it refers to a lot of extra work.

The now Grade II listed headstone of railway fireman Edward Booth is a reminder of the tragic Ulleskelf accident which occurred OTD 24 November in 1906 when in fog, the train on which he was working missed a red signal and crashed into a coal train killing himself and the driver.

1/3 After attending Lambeth School of Art, Hannah Barlow was the first woman employed by Doulton & Co, #Lambeth in 1871 to paint their ceramics. She was joined a few years later by sister Florence - Hannah’s designs featured animals while Florence painted birds and flowers.

Love this! My Nana had a fuchsia nursery in Cornwall and I have fond memories of taking fuchsia cuttings with her in the greenhouses
'Greenhouse Interior,' (c1935) shows Stanley Spencer's common practice at the time of this painting; a closely observed and highly detailed flower painting, in this case fuchsias, against a receding background.
