I absolutely snorted out loud in an important, quiet historic reading room. And then had the giggles for 5 minutes. Fingle rows of tentaculated fuckers!

Hmmm, between the crab lice and harvest people, maybe too much? Here is a pretty orchid mantis as a palate cleanser www.flickr.com/photos/total...

Something cute to pick you up -- a worksheet from an elementary student whose classroom got butterfly eggs from a @donorschoose.bsky.social donation I made! Who cares about spelling when the learning is so adorable. 🦋🐛😀

A beautiful bit of art for your morning. Painting by Yamamoto Baiitsu, Japan, 1847. The full work is 250cm long! Full scroll with 50 insects at: www.metmuseum.org/art/collecti...

Let's start Monday with some whimsy. These delightful grasshoppers (possibly also katydids?) are from a water jar created by Makuzu Kōzan in 1870. To see full size images: www.metmuseum.org/art/collecti...

I gave a lunchtime talk as a @xercessociety.bsky.social Ambassador to the local County Parks group, and the cookies had bees on them! Unsurprisingly, it was a friendly audience 😀🐝
Here's a fantastic resource I shared on creating nesting and overwintering habitat: xerces.org/publications...

Spending today putting together displays for a Park program Sunday. The last of the 2025 swallowtail caterpillars (Papilio polyxenes) are about to pupate! I added a photo from earlier this year of an adult. (1/2)

Via www.drought.gov, this region of Ohio is experiencing severe drought. I've never seen it like this.
October 16, 2025 at 9:53 PM
I went for a walk along the Maumee River today, but it turned into a walk across the river because of the drought. You can see an alvar in the middle of the (former) river; these large dolemite formations are typical of North American Great Lakes 🪨

A little break from reality: a delightful insect procession by Nishiyama Kan'ei (Japan, Edo period). Check out the original for more delightful details www.metmuseum.org/art/collecti...

ARRRR it be Minute Pirate Bug Season 🏴‍☠️ in the NorthEast US! These little mateys (~5mm) are normally helpful biocontrol, but in the fall they are hungry -- and sometimes try snacking on people gardening. extension.umn.edu/beneficial-i...

Holy cow a lot is going on in the US right now. You may also need to take a deep breath and look closely at a painted lady butterfly.

Today in embarrassing news: I tripped on a Roomba and broke my big toe. Look for me in the end of year "2025 Stupidest Emergency Room Visits" list.
Here's a new native plant in my garden this year; Salvia azurea. The blue is so blue 😍🐝

Need a distraction from current events? I Got U.
Apparently pubic lice fluoresce under UV light! Link to research paper: www.cureus.com/articles/413... I need some EntoFriends to head to their collections with a UV light to confirm this 🤔🧪

I'm doing a talk as a @xercessociety.bsky.social ambassador tonight at my local library about Leaving the Leaves and creating pollinator habitat. I'm trying to not let the news get to me and keep plugging away with community service and helping teachers. It's *mostly* working.
Mostly.

Thrilled to say my latest for Highlights Kids Magazine is out; the October edition includes my article on carnivorous sundews. (1/2)
September 1, 2025 at 8:55 PM
FYI my numbers in my article came from the Catalog of life; you can see that mammals don't even show up on the pie chart of animal species. It's Arthropods all the Way Down. www.catalogueoflife.org/data/taxon/N

I had to take a new author photo with the instructions to have a "neutral face." The result clearly says "come at me bro if you think you're hard enough" 😀 (not a bad look for a woman writing online, tho)

The September issue of Highlights magazine is out, so I can finally talk about my article about Sea Angels. They're sweet and pretty, quietly flapping through the sea... until they detect prey, their head splits open, and the tentacles come out.

Just realized that my to-do list for this evening looks like some ISH is gonna go down 🚙🐝 (I release newly emerged bees at sundown)
July 10, 2025 at 5:49 PM
Probably the last of my leaf cutter bees has emerged! Fly little one 😍🐝

I showed some of the kids in my neighborhood the waxworm caterpillars I feed to my tarantula. I explained these can live in honeybee hives and eat the beeswax. The littles wanted to know if they could take some home and feed them with earwax 😆😂 #KidJoy

This is from a middle school class doing an insect unit; I bought them ladybugs via @donorschoose.bsky.social. Make sure to select "Historically Underfunded Schools" to find teachers with highest needs and an equity focus. #BugFairy
