What a day! What a spectacular, creative and dramatic launch for This Slavery. The book is superb! The exhibition, a tribute to Ethel Carnie Holdsworth was truly inspiring. Well done to you all!

So proud of these two sisters! The work they produce in collaboration is much more than they could do individually. Together they make magic happen.
As their mother I may be ever so slightly biased but this new Rickard Sisters' book is an absolute cracker!

Nesting blue tits in my garden seem to love finding the small clumps of dog hair I've put in the bushes for them to line their nests.

The bird is set against a marbled textured background created by cracking the wax in the Batik process and letting the blue/grey dye into the cracks. All my work is lit from behind, the residual wax left in the fabric gives it a translucent quality like stained glass.

It's all in Tressell's 'The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists' written in 1910. Have you read it?
The graphic novel adaptation by @rickardsisters.bsky.social is a great place to start.

A double-header steam locomotive, clouds of white smoke issuing from its funnel, crosses Whalley Arches in Lancashire, silhouetted against a blue batik-crackled sky. The red brick viaduct, its reflection in the water below, spans the River Calder (which flows into the Ribble) with fields of sheep and trees on both sides. The magnificent Whalley Arches was the view from my window for twenty years before my move to Shropshire.

Something to cheer us all up during these grey February days. A window box of spring flowers and fresh green leaves. The lock-keeper's house at Middlewich in Cheshire with it's beautiful colourful garden tumbling down to the water's edge stands proud under a blue-grey marbled sky. The deep lock with its white-painted balance beams and ornamental detail on its iron entrance catches the eye. In the foreground a small chunky tethered white pony peacefully munches the grass beside the towpath.

A herd of zebras walk and graze around this original Batik lampshade. The overlapping black and white zebras stand out strongly against the hazy blue grey African marbled sky which is crackled with the sand and orange colours of the hot dry savannah grass below.

The scene is of an old run-down Paris café with a small round white metal table and folding chairs on the pavement out front. The cream walls are cracked and peeling and the café windows are covered in old net curtains. The facade is brown with a sign across the frontage reading 'Vins Café Liqueurs. On the pavement the table for two has empty chairs. All that remains is a wine bottle and a single glass. An unsuccessful romantic rendezvous? How sad.

A proud lion with lioness and cub sit under a hot batik-crackled cream and burnt orange sky. This batik was initially part of a colour test for a six panel lampshade featuring lions and cubs, made for a commission in 2016. It is now framed & back-lit and for sale in my Gallery.

A steam locomotive arrives at a country station coming towards the viewer on a bridge across the tracks, only the railings in view. The train is surrounded by grey smoke and clouds of white steam. On the platform, the station master waits outside the white clapper-board station buildings with his flag and next to him, a few passengers prepare to alight. A couple with a single suitcase say an emotional farewell with echos of 'Brief Encounter'. Behind the scene are green sheep-filled hills and a tunnel entrance through which the train is emerging. The sky is summer blue, textured with batik crackle darker blue marbling.

Five white ducks with yellow beaks mess about on the banks of a flowing river bordered by reeds and bullrushes. Another two are tails up diving for food. Three more march purposely away from us in line up a gravel path through dark green grass. The water is a study in blues and greens and batik crackle giving it texture and movement. In the distance the light shines on the water in front of a small brick bridge. The sky is summer blue and deeply crackled with darker blue marbled texture. White puffy clouds rise behind the bridge and the pale distant fields.
