America fought World War II to defend democracy from fascism. And while fascism preserved hierarchies in society, democracy called on all men as equals. Of the more than 16 million Americans who served in the war, more than 1.2 million were Black American men and women, 500,000 were Latinos, and more than 550,000 Jews were part of the military. Among the many ethnic groups who fought, Indigenous Americans served at a higher percentage than any other ethnic group—more than a third of able-bodied Indigenous men between the ages of 18 and 50 joined the service-and among those 25,000 soldiers were the men who developed the famous "Code Talk" based in tribal languages, that codebreakers never cracked.

Even if the U.S. is at war with drug traffickers—a dubious argument—it is a war crime to kill individuals who are “outside of combat,” no longer posing an imminent threat. It’s hard to imagine that two unarmed, shipwrecked men trying to right the remains of a capsized boat in the ocean hundreds of miles from the U.S. posed a threat.

At his waterfront estate, billionaire developer-turned-special envoy Steve Witkoff was hosting Kirill Dmitriev, head of Russia's sovereign-wealth fund and Vladimir Putin's handpicked negotiator, who had largely shaped the document they were revising on the screen. Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law, had arrived from his nearby home on an island known as the "Billionaire Bunker." Dmitriev was pushing a plan for U.S. companies to tap the roughly $300 billion of Russian central bank assets, frozen in Europe, for U.S.-Russian investment projects and a U.S.-led reconstruction of Ukraine. U.S. and Russian companies could join to exploit the vast mineral wealth in the Arctic. There were no limits to what two longtime adversaries could achieve, Dmitriev had argued for months: Their rival space industries, which raced one another during the Cold War, could even pursue a joint mission to Mars with Elon Musk's SpaceX.

A source has told The Telegraph that Trump is sending special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner to Moscow to offer Russia's president Vladimir Putin U.S. recognition of Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea and most of the other four eastern oblasts of Ukraine: Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia. This is the territory covered in the "Mariupol Plan" in which Russian operatives told Trump's 2016 campaign manager, Paul Manafort, they would help Trump win the election in exchange for his looking the other way as Russia took control of the region.

Tether isn't a U.S. company. It's headquartered in and overseen by El Salvador, whose authoritarian ruler Nayib Bukele is best known in financial circles for his expensive, failing attempt to force Salvadorans to use Bitcoin as currency.
Tether has attracted the most scrutiny, in large part because it has, as The Economist puts it, become "money launderers' dream currency." Leaving aside its role in facilitating global crime and viewing it as in effect a bank, how sound is Tether? On Wednesday S&P Global Ratings issued a scathing report, questioning the quality of Tether's assets and noting that the company is highly secretive, giving outsiders no good way to assess its claims to be financially stable. But aren't government regulators keeping an eye on Tether? Um, no. Tether isn't a U.S. company. It's headquartered in and overseen by El Salvador, whose authoritarian ruler Nayib Bukele is best known in financial circles for his expensive, failing attempt to force Salvadorans to use Bitcoin as currency. El Salvador's prudential guidelines for Tether are very lax, and how much faith do we have that even these weak rules are being enforced?

In America, firms spy on us, right? And they spy on us in ways that are very bad for us. So if you're a nurse, preferentially, hospitals want to hire you as a contractor through an app because that way you're not in a union. It used to be through a staffing agency. Now there's four national apps. They all bill themselves as "Uber for nursing". And because we don't have a privacy law ... every other form of privacy violation is lawful. So they can ask the unregulated data brokers that have these deep dossiers on every person how much credit card debt that nurse is carrying. And the more credit card debt they're holding, and the more overdue it is, the lower the wage they're offered. That's regulatory capture. People who make money by charging a desperation premium to nurses are among the people who help lobby to make sure we don't get a privacy law.

So let's look at the two bubbles that we're going through right now. We have cryptocurrency, right? And all cryptocurrency is going to leave behind is Like shitty Austrian economics and worse monkey JPEGs. And then we have Al. And Al is going to leave behind some stuff, right? Al is going to leave behind a bunch of GPUs at 10p on the pound, right? It's going to leave behind a bunch of applied statisticians who are suddenly looking for work. And it's going to leave behind a bunch of open source models that these companies have made as loss leaders and calling cards that have barely been optimised and that still have so much room for improvement.

You may remember Amazon had these shops, the "just walk out" shops where you would walk in and fill your basket and just walk out and the Al cameras would do it. There wasn't - there weren't Al cameras. Each camera was being watched by three people in an Indian call centre trying to figure out among them which thing you just put in your basket. You know, "fake it until you make it" and all, but this is literally like three pretend Als in a trenchcoat.
