I also once worked at a B&N and I remember those. Luckily, I managed the children's department and very rarely had to shelve the adult carts. My biggest nemesis was those spiral bound scratch and sketch books, which were IMPOSSIBLE to shelve. #kidlitchat

It's nothing too crazy! She's also wearing grey pants and a grey long sleeve shirt under it, and I'm going to put some rainbow colored glow sticks on her during trick or treating! I had to make it super flexible for playing since she's 3. lol #kidlitchat

Lol, I'll have to dig a bit. The one I could quickly find is this one. I was the the duckling. 😂 #kidlitchat

I got some spooky 👻 booooook mail 👻 today from the amazing @justincolonbooks.bsky.social! Okay, it's *technically* for my daughter, but she might have to share. If you haven't read THE ZOMBEES by Justin and illustrated by @kalyquarles.bsky.social, you're missing out! 🧟‍♂️🐝🎃

🎃 31 Days of Halloween 🎃

IT'S HALLOWEEN by Jack Prelutsky & art by Marylin Hafner

Why I 🖤 it: Just do yourself a favor and listen to this recording of Prelutsky reciting the poems set to eerie music, complete with static and record pops: youtu.be/vg8qeWDSk3o?...

🎃 31 Days of Halloween Books 🎃

Day 12 (late edition): THE GHOST-EYE TREE by Bill Martin, Jr. & John Archambault & art by Ted Rand

Why I 🖤 it: Originally written as a theater performance, this is a great--and only slightly traumatizing--read aloud for school age kids.

I'm working on the rough sketches for a new dummy about a squirrel and it is...a bit unhinged. May or may not be loosely based on my OCD. 🐿️😜

Day 14: THE ZOMBEES by @justincolonbooks.bsky.social and art by @kalyquarles.bsky.social

Why I 🖤 it: I was not expecting this to be a rhyming PB but boy did Justin pull it off! Plus, Kaly's whimsical & adorable art had my 3 year old obsessed!

Day 11: A WOGGLE OF WITCHES by Adrienne Adams

Why I 🖤 it: Published in 1971, this is one of the most brilliantly illustrated Halloween books on my list. Check out some of the illustrations in the comments!

🎃 31 Days of Halloween Books 🎃

Day 10: THE GHOSTS GO MARCHING by Maria Modugno & illustrated by Claudia Boldt

Why I 🖤 it: Read to the tune of "The Ants Go Marching," this book had my 3 year old begging to read it again and again. A great preschool read aloud!

Day 9: DRAGON'S HALLOWEEN by Dav Pilkey

Why I 🖤 it: Dragon is one of my favorite #kidlit characters of all time. Sweet and hilarious, this is a great read aloud for preschoolers, but it's also perfect for early readers to read on their own.

Day 8 (a day late): PUMPKIN SOUP by Helen Cooper

Why I 🖤 it: I always think of this book as cozy, but then I read it every year and I'm reminded that it is truly bizarre and a bit unsettling. Cozy it up with a bowl of real pumpkin soup!

Hope you're ready for...

🐦 birdbrained schemes
💥 slapstick antics
🤓 idiom-based characters à la The Bad Seed
😶 introspection? (lol not a chance)
😵 a catapult?!

...because, ready or not, here comes LATE BIRD.

LATE BIRD is sick of Early Bird getting all the worms--and all the glory. But don't worry, Late Bird has a plan. Forget the alarm clock, this calls for a catapult. Look out world, here comes Late Bird!

Day 7: THIS YEAR, A WITCH! by Zoey Abbott

Why I 🖤 it: I'm a sucker for a feisty little girl with slightly evil-adjacent aspirations. Plus, the neon color palette paired with inky illustrations is unique and captivating.

Day 6: GHOSTS IN THE HOUSE! by Kazuno Kohara

Why I 🖤 it: Made with linocut and black ink on orange paper (& ghosts that appear to be white tissue paper), I love the simple, bold illustrations juxtaposed with the laborious technique.

Day 5: A TEENY TINY HALLOWEEN by Lauren L. Wohl & art by Henry Cole

Why I 🖤 it: Sweet and not at all spooky, it makes a great read aloud. But what I really love is the warm & cozy watercolor illustrations with a classic Halloween palette.

Day 4: BONY-LEGS by Joanna Cole & Dirk Zimmer

Why I 🖤 it: Published in 1983, this book is hard to find. A retelling of Baba Yaga, it is eerie & dark in a way only a 40 year old children's book can be. In the end, though, kindness prevails.

Day 3: EEK! HALLOWEEN! by Sandra Boynton

Why I love it: Sandra Boynton is a genius. No one has captured my toddler's heart like her. On Halloween, StRaNgE tHiNgS aRe HaPpEnInG and kids will enjoy pointing out that they are just costumes!
