Haugen is actually Lutheran—or maybe UCC now?—but a LOT of his music is sung in English-speaking US Catholic churches.

But honestly, Mass settings—while essential!!—are not the primary way US Catholics know liturgical music. You’d be better off looking online for a “Catholic bangers” playlist. 😂

If you go to 6:15 of this video you will see Pope Leo singing along to a Marty Haugen hymn. He doesn't have a song sheet; he just knows it. You guys, I am never getting over this American pope thing.

My Greek used to be serviceable, but lack of use erodes language.

“No, see, your foolish feminist agenda reads ἐνανθρωπήσαντα and ‘homo factus’ and sees ‘became human,’ but any dispassionate and objective translator KNOWS it must be ‘became man,’ I am a renowned academic.”

That’s also my guess, but was curious if anyone knew for certain.

It’s interesting that there’s been such a translation shift in the past … year and a half?, and I’m recalling all of the blisteringly stupid fights in grad school re “for us men” and “became man.”

My birthday is his feast day & for many years one of my friends, as a birthday present, would text me “Will no one…” in a new medieval language each year.

I reworded this 3 times to try to be clear & perhaps it’s just the post-festive-meal blurriness but:

To be clear, what I am saying is: I have a problem with people being uncharitable jerks and I feel confident you are NOT an uncharitable jerk.

Everyone has preferences! Many people have well-grounded preferences! But one can have well-grounded preferences without being an uncharitable and condescending jerk to others! (which—firmly avoiding the path of condescending jerkery—is how I suspect you live)

I need to finish Evil! I started it & really liked it, and then hit a period where watching that kind of show immediately before trying to sleep wasn’t working out for me; now that I have some time to watch tv in the afternoon I need to finish it.

lol—well any time you need cranky opinions about random Catholic minutiae with bonus humor, that’s what @catholickungfu.bsky.social and I are on the internet for.

I think.

At least partially.
