I feel you. I do wonder if using movies as comps is more effective because they're more widely seen than comics are read regardless of ones intention. Lord knows I've pitched "evil dead meets..." In my life.

I think I connect with stuff pre-2005 the most. But the sweet spot for me is mid-70s through mid-90s. And obvious to anyone who sees my work, the 59s horror and crime books. I REALLY love a lot after that. Those just hits different.

I like how nerdy and weird older comics were. And kinda cool to me because of that. That doesn't mean new comics stink. Just that I connect more with older ones, more often than not.

Not saying outside influence isnt good. It definitely is. But a healthy diet of comics seems essential to producing very very good ones.

Additionally, the creators probably consumed a bigger portion of comics as their entertainment (largely due to availability. Fewer video games, movies and prestige TV influencing the stories).

Wes Anderson is a good example of something for sure. I haven't seen Black Bag but Soderbergh def has that in his bag. I love it when he pulls it out
