This Halloween, my costume is an electric heat pump water heater (HPWH).

If you don’t think this is a SCARY costume - here are some scary policy developments related to water heating.

Re: these headlines from the @climateinstitute.bsky.social newsletter

Given weather extremes and wildfires should transmission lines be the top priority?

They fall down in storms and smoke causes them to short circuit

Batteries, air sealing & filtration keep lights on and smoke out

A new type of "window heat pump" that gives tenants an ability to be cool in the summer and warm in the winter without relying on a landlord's central system

It plus into a standard 120-volt outlet

A recent @aceee.org report found this to be a cost-effective tech www.aceee.org/press-releas...

Canada is looking for a homegrown, adaptable energy options in these turbulent times.

In a new report we find that energy efficiency is a very "made-in-Canada" resource, with opportunities to further increase self-reliance and economic resilience.

Quick comparison suggests they plan to save about 1% on average a year.

That's about what Nova Scotia regulatory achieves today and some states are targeting double that amount. So perhaps Québec could do even more!

Switching from oil to heat pump can certainly save a lot of money.

Here is a recent estimate of the savings, and a blog outlining a bunch of other reasons why oil is expensive and risky w/ @sarahriddell.bsky.social

My article with @evanpivnick.bsky.social & @sachigibson.bsky.social is re-published by @cleanenergycanada.org

So I get to re-share it, with my meme

Why pay power plants, when you can pay people to be energy efficient and demand flexible?

Under the new 🇨🇦 Clean Electricity Regulations, let's make paying people for energy efficiency the first resort and natural gas the last @stevenguilbeault.bsky.social 🔌💡

Canada's energy efficiency program savings and spending is increasing.

Why? Provinces are doing real net-zero planning & they need it for affordability, as well as growing demand for clean electricity

A bunch of energy efficiency allies mobilized to support electricity energy efficiency

The electricity programs survived, and now they are ready to grow

I was involved in educating on ratepayer funded efficiency being a "resource" for the electricity system.

All the #cdnpoli electricity / energy roadmap people @evanpivnick.bsky.social @jasondion.bsky.social

What's up with energy roadmap guidance in the Fall Economic Statement not including energy efficiency / demand management?

Nova Scotia dropped from previous Scorecards

It isn’t that its performance has gone down – other provinces have gone up and are overtaking this traditional leader in efficiency programs

New Brunswick has climbed significantly in Scorecard rankings

The Auditor General used previous Scorecards, and the gov’t implemented recommendations re: stable fossil fuel program funding, electricity targets, and low-income programs
November 28, 2024 at 3:50 PM
PEI leads in efficiency programs

It has taken a whole-of-gov’t approach to reaching net-zero, which includes aggressively tackling energy poverty with free heat pumps and insulation

Quebec is a leader in electric transportation and industrial efficiency

It has enabling legislation to implement a mandatory building performance standard for existing buildings

November 28, 2024 at 3:50 PM
The top rank goes to BC

BC has its pioneering “step” building code and promotes transportation electrification

Every new heating system could be climate-ready by implementing a proposed “100% efficiency” standard

The latest data shows the highest levels of efficiency program spending yet

More provinces are realizing they need more energy efficiency to manage electricity load growth, reduce energy poverty, and take climate action in a way that reduces the cost of living

Can I be on this one? I direct an energy efficiency research and advocacy org in Canada.

Even got some media for heat pump Halloween costume 😀

CBC report on oil furnace phase out in Canada (for new buildings)

See cost of oil compared to heat pump system below.

Why not protect consumers by phasing out in both new and replacements in existing buildings?

Home heating oil is expensive

Regulations that prevent installation of new fuel oil heating systems is a customer protection measure at this point
