An engrossing whodunit with an unlikely amateur detective at the helm of solving it. I thoroughly enjoyed Simon’s book; it snuck up on me as among my favorite mystery reads of the year. Notably, this was also Simon’s debut book, which portends such promise for whatever she does next.

Jiles wrote a beautiful, lovely, horrific revenge story set in the perfect time and circumstance, and with the most appropriate of endings. I would have followed the chivalrous, but also pugilistic Chenneville on his horse (with dog in tow!) anywhere. One of my favorite reads of the year. Well-done.

Mosley writes Easy and the cases he gets up to as a private detective in 1950s and 1960s LA with such hard-boiled gritty flare while imbuing his stories with poignant, bone marrow deep reflections on America, race relations, and even the sorrows and pain of war that make for an enthralling read.

Richard Danzig's Chance Cormac legal thriller had a cast of compelling characters and two very different storylines that kept me engaged and interested throughout.

While I thought it came across a bit Agatha Christie-lite, I do wonder what peak Rendell would be like. All the same, I was still enthralled by wondering at the whodunit of it all.

Scherm's book is about how we shape the contours of our identities, our relationships, and importantly, how we rationalize to ourselves the nature of both relative to expectation. A must-read; it's one of those books that snuck up and wowed me.
