Thank you Jen! I created a string variable with the text, chose a continuous color map and normalized the color values over the length of the text. Then I used a for loop to iterate over each character, positioning it along the x axis and applying a color, based on its index in the string.

I agree with you. Sketching by hand helps stay focused before writing the code.
