good ol' grateful deadcast co-host / @wfmu.bsky.social DJ / author of "wasn't that a time" (hachette, 2018), "heads" (hachette, 2016), "big day coming" (gotham, 2012) / jessejarnow.com / heads.social/@bourgwick
enjoying my semi-regular mindblow that ken burns's main narrator, peter coyote, was one of the radical haight-ashbury diggers.

tom constanten's post-dead project, "tarot" by touchstone, late-blossoming baroque jazz psych recorded in '71, spun off from a musical & niftier than i'd expected, a more fully realized version of a voice only glimpsed with the GD. pretty wild gatefold art by (ex country joe) drummer chicken hirsh.

truly amazing: the sprawling serial novel by the late rick harris, aka thoughts on the dead, set in little aleppo, somewhere between springfield & macondo. literary fiction as text cartoon. wise & dark & so, so funny. sadly, only available from amazon print on demand: www.amazon.com/Book-No-Titl...

extremely "vineland" like moment in @gmantic.bsky.social's extraordinary new biography of terence mckenna, "strange attractor." also: relatable!

picked this up at the show at p.i.t. & having my mind straight up splattered. coltrane & dolphy (with tyner, garrison, & jones) at birdland in '62, preserved off the radio by jazz hustler boris rose. dizzying fire & grace by all players at all moments.

plus the freshest bootleg jazz cassette selection in town

cozy friday at the p.i.t. with the 75 dollar bill little big band, sneaking from drone to glowing chiming pulse (with an accidental late set bass drop) (couldn't squeeze talice into the photo) & mauritanian folk-poet ibrahima sow, heavy stories & floating guitar (sometimes in translation).

sometimes, various members of the rolling stones are rumored to have turned up at the san jose acid test following their own show at the civic auditorium, but this is almost certainly wishful myth making. [3/4]

60 years ago tonight, the san jose acid test, the grateful dead’s 1st gig as the grateful dead, in a house downtown after a rolling stones show. several hand drawn flyers showed up this year, as described in tom wolfe’s electric kool aid acid test, but with seemingly the wrong address on them. 50 years ago tonight, the jerry garcia band at home at keystone berkeley. sweet & very stereo audience tape by bob menke/louis falanga, besides the woman screaming nearby one of the microphones during the 1st set. plus, a rare non-acoustic opening act. heads.social/@bourgwick/1... #garciafreaksunite

while it's therapeutic to hear the stooges get pelted with ice/eggs/bottles, the most sonically shocking part of "metallic k.o." for me might be all the borderline boogie piano by scott thurston.

important jazz lore research by @longrally.bsky.social in the newest issue of @wfmu.bsky.social's LCD. who was the infamous jam interrupter known as The Demon? free jazz pioneer or just a shitty sax player?

60 years ago tonight, the merry pranksters' 1st informal acid test, held at ken babbs's place outside santa cruz, where the grateful dead did not play (& all purported flyers are almost certainly fake). below text from dennis mcnally's bio.

bootleg LP trifecta: errors in 3 different phrases on the cover! horrendously gunky audience tape of "r. steward" & the "small faces" at the forum in LA, march '71, with covers as well as covers of covers, in "sterio." artwork variant currently unlisted in discogs (albeit i.c. records' template).

i rarely intend to buy willie nelson albums but then there they are. this is delightful & sets a sweet mood, from 1981, in the "stardust"/standards mode but more a chill & well-recorded acoustic session than jazz pop & maybe a bit looser, even.
