Literally any position no matter how obviously morally and ethically right they'll pre-emptively compromise on

These are people who go into every negotiation doing the calculus of what they think they could reasonably get and then ask for even less [ and / inevitably get less still ]

This might come as a surprise to you, but I believe you are more to the right than the person you are responding to.

There needs to be a health middle ground where these kinds of medications are readily available for people like yourself that need them, AND not overprescribed for things where they don’t even have a high efficacy like a tooth ache.

Unfortunately what we are doing now isn’t working for anyone.

If these drugs become more available, they will be prescribed, simply because doctors are unaware of how harmful they are.

The companies enter a country and schmooze high level officials with lines like “You don’t want a country of people in pain, yes? We have the solution!”

Some countries though are already moving forward in the manner USA did in early 2000s.

I was in Brazil once and had an abscessed tooth. It was aching badly so I went to see the doctor. Told him I needed something stronger than Tylenol and he proceeds to write me an RX for 30x 30mg OxyContin pills…

A bigger problem I see is the lack treatment for those who wish to recover from their addiction.

Methadone is virtually non-existent outside of USA, Canada, and Europe, and Buprenorphine/Suboxone even in less supply.

Already are in most countries. Typically the lower strength stuff like Tramadol and Codeine is legal, sometimes even hydrocodone, but good luck finding anything stronger almost anywhere in LATAM.

They have some low dosage Buprenorphine options for pain, but that’s often the max strength.
