drones in the flight path: not just for heads of state

i watched the first lego movie in several different theaters because everytime it was so much fun. stupid movie. no nutritional value at all. BUT! can i interest you in Giant Lego?

i’ll chip in $5 if chris starts advocating for a general strike across all of his platforms lol
December 7, 2025 at 12:51 AM
right, but on the gaant chart you don’t get to simply decide ahead of time how much that exploratory stage is going to take. the solution to these problems isn’t not doing them, or pretending they aren’t real, it’s throwing a WPA worth of people at the problem
December 7, 2025 at 12:46 AM
there are still living russian first responders who risked their lives to halt the meltdown and run the cleanup operations. idk if those are the kind of people i want walking through my neighborhood, or knowing where to find me if i were involved in a drone strike that risked recontamination

nobody did anything wrong, but it’s what happens when you decide to try to dig around under an american city. the city burned down, then we thought it would be neat to turn a damp underground sub basement into a records room. things got lost
December 7, 2025 at 12:34 AM
that never turns out to be the case. i used to commute past the above ground muni extension in soma every day, then later had a front row seat to the van ness projects. they kept finding all kinds of shit under the road and having to pause the project to redesign some signal system and try again

bespoke transit implementations with complex operating requirements are not directly
comparable. the swiss made a very impressive car tunnel, but it would require starting from scratch to try to run the caldecot tunnel or transbay tube according to e.g. their operations manual
December 7, 2025 at 12:26 AM
the roi on an automation project has to he astronomical to risk taking muni or bart offline because of a software bug, to say nothing of the opportunity cost vis a vis any number of other
programs.

san francisco can not afford to fund their school system, and sponsor exploratory software projects with untested teams on life safety systems
December 7, 2025 at 12:20 AM
right. big projects require specialized knowledge, and international cooperation. if software was a real job, one would expect san francisco to have slack project management expertise to contribute, but uh… i have some bad news on that front

we live in an earthquake zone, with under ground, and under sea mass transit, in addition to operating several high capacity train and car tunnels. who are you paying to know how to tow the train out of the bay when it breaks?
December 7, 2025 at 12:12 AM
rent costs ~$2500/month/person. if we find really altruistic people who will do Public Service for cheap, like, at some point you’re going to have to buy a building for them to work in. open up 42floors and start sending links for cheap space
December 7, 2025 at 12:10 AM
okay. what are you cutting? maybe we can fire a few dozen admin staff at the jail, but emergancy dispatch is already at capacity so we should keep those guys
December 7, 2025 at 12:07 AM
long time resident. love it. you ever get stuck in the caldecot tunnel? that’s not traumatizing
December 7, 2025 at 12:05 AM
what cost savings? bart is the public service. every spare dollar is going into operations, fixing trains, and running safety training excersizes anytime more than 5 people are in a room together. people will die if bart is down. oh no an earth quake
December 7, 2025 at 12:04 AM
how much should that cost? also, a highrise is sinking so you should probably deal with that first
December 7, 2025 at 12:02 AM
it’s 800,000 people in 49 sq miles of difficult terrain, with overloaded social services, the most recognizable skyline in the world, home to several of the most high value companies in the world, oh yeah and also SFO, and a race where 500,000 people day drink in public every year + 4/20
December 7, 2025 at 12:01 AM
tbf, there are plenty of good engineers but they work grown up jobs in alameda. anyone with enough time to volunteer for bart is, by definition, under employed and probably not a good fit for the organization. you can’t ship vibe coded train automation

if anyone even implies that brooke jenkins or london breed were anti tech, i’m going to start knocking things over
