Please person that is probably differing their property taxes, creating more burden for those of us who gladly pay to support people who need it - Tell me all about how beneficial it is to heavily cut programs and services for some percentage council plucked out of the air. #yyj #yyjpoli
Gardiner: "I no longer believe we should be targeting 4%, that is too high"... "before we knew the police provisional budget and the challenges the whole economy would be facing in the years ahead, and that means the taxpayers."
November 24, 2025 at 8:09 PM
... Bike lanes are core 🤷‍♂️ - Maybe if Marg is this concerned about core infrastructure she shouldn't be so fucking obsessed with keeping property tax increases artificially low >_> #yyj #yyjpoli
Gardiner: Engineering staff have shown us what happens when you defer core funding, and you can map road conditions from areas that have been underfunded. "Remember this isn't about bike lanes. This is about core work."
November 24, 2025 at 6:42 PM
There was a 0% tax lift in 2020 - Which we'll be paying for for a while via things like road/pothole/infrastructure repair, so on.. #yyj #yyjpoli
Staff: Biggest reduction to reserves to limit tax increase was in 2020. Other situations where less or nothing has been added. "It tends to be a quite frequent conversation... setting aside infrastructure funding."

A 100% unforced error. And the 4% target doesn't even exist. Here's the resolution that started it all. It was the "baseline" for the budget. I watched the meeting, and it was clear to everyone that Council had the authority to make whatever changes that made sense.

Bike valet removed from the chopping block at $448,000.

Motivations include:
Bike valet connected to the experienced 28% reduction in bike thefts in the City over a few years.
It's part of community safety and good for downtown businesses.

At least it’s deferred and not cut? Weird to me that Councillors in a city that overwhelmingly and consistently vote for “pro bike lane” councillors are even considering this. #yyj #yyjpoli .. this 4% target is such an unforced error.
Motion to defer multi-modal corridors passes with just Thompson in opposition. Staff will return to us if the grant application is successful and we need to revisit this decision.

Is there a 'overton window' for public budgeting? #yyjpoli Council sets unrealistic single digit budget increase cap, cuts much loved and long running public programs (Hanging baskets), Instead of just adding that item back in to the budget jumps instantly to 'sponsorship'. U G H

Next item: liquor license application for 759 Yates St (Glitch Bar). Former Yates St Taphouse location.

Gardiner asking questions. Dell moves staff motion. Moving through the motions of comments.

Alto says previous establishment was open just a half hour less.

Motion passes. Gardiner opposed.

Really glad this passed - We're far to restrictive about when and how restaurants and bars operate here, frankly - You do not move to a city core for 'peace and quiet' (of course, within reasonable limits..). #yyj #yyjpoli
Motion to reject liquor license application fails with just Hammond, Thompson, Kim, Gardiner against.

Motion to support the application now passes with just Hammond, Thompson, Gardiner in opposition.

Gardiner comments: "Entertainment areas should be liveable for residents who live nearby." Nearby residents have spoken up about the interference with their lives and loss of sleep. Supporting staff recommendation.

I'm /SO/ Confused.. Where is all this money going? #yyj #yyjpoli - What was going on with VicPD Under Del Manak that the most expensive per capita police force in B.C. has a vehicle fleet that is embarrassing?
Chief: "In fact the vehicle I was given on the very first day, I was embarrassed to drive and... I wasn't convinced it was going to get me home." "As much as I have a great deal of empathy for your situation, what we're asking for is a product of years of inadequate funding."
November 20, 2025 at 7:44 PM
"I believe VicPD is 50-55 officers short for our authorized strength. I do not anticipate that this year's ask will be replicated next year." The VicPD budget as it nears $175 million a year after hiring like 7 of those 55 officers for office jobs.

#yyj #yyjpoli I'm miffed about the 90 million but if we get permanent beat and actual traffic enforcement i'll noisily breath through my nose and go on with my life
Chief: absolutely critical to have uniformed officers visible. Not about throwing people in jail. About developing relationships with some of the folks creating the street disorder and to help people avoid the criminal justice system.
November 20, 2025 at 7:07 PM
Note: Incidence of traffic violations doesn't show up on this list specifically because we have only 2 traffic enforcement officers and apparently just didn't care.. #yyj #yyjpoli
