Yes! That is one odd looking species! They 'flop' through thick areas and are difficult to see - at least the few times I've seen them. That unique beak is diagnostic, as are the pale eyes. Here are photos of the other two species of Anis, Groove-billed and Smooth-billed.

Several hours at Portoviejo's "Jardin Botanico" provided nonstop birding entertainment.
One never tires of seeing the lovely Cocoi Heron.
Or the unique Red-billed Scythebill.

Jardin Botanico/Portoviejo - Lurking in deep shadows of scrubby trees, the Greater Anis (Crotophaga major) looked more like black turkeys than Anis! Eventually the neighborhood feathered residents chased these intruders to other perches and better view!

Yes, they are beautiful elegant birds!
Most birders here 'dream' of seeing the GB Heron AND the very rare Green Heron. The latter 'dropped' out of the sky at a city park for a photo session, much to the envy of most birders in Ecuador! Friends still ask for notification if another appears!

"... a few hundred photos of beautiful herons..."

That statement made me chuckle; I also take 'a few hundred photos' when feathered eye candy beckons!

The Great Blue is a 'Rare Bird alert' species in W. Ecuador, but the lovely Cocoi provides adequate compensation!

Do any of you Bsky birders plan to help with CBC circles this year?

What a refreshing surprise to see this notification - and for a few seconds wondered whose quote I was reading.. and then chuckled.
Will close with more Cocoi Heron eye candy! #birds, #birdsSeenIn2025
Thanks!

It's important to purge that grief.

👍We have three Anis here: Smooth-billed, Groove-billed, and Greater (Crotophaga major)
I've also painted the Groove-billed with colors: "...so what IF the Groove-billed Ani wore rainbow colors? Would it be nearing extinction - prized for its colorful feathers?"

Your Substack post was sensitive and informative; thanks for including the recommendations and links.

Here is the drawing I worked on - not only in the field but also late at night as I kept one eye on Melissa's path.

Finished at 4 last night/early morning. Now I'm working on the color version.

This coastal area of SW Ecuador and NW Peru is the Tumbesian Region, home of 55 endemic bird species. The majority of birds that showed up yesterday and today were endemics. Here are a few: Long-tailed Mockingbird, Pacific Parrotlets, Croaking Ground-dove (yes they croak!) (Gray day, dull photos)

Concerns about Melissa's path and strength have shadowed me as I worked on a pencil drawing this weekend. Instead of calling it 'Muyuyu Botanical,' I should probably rename it, "Thinking of Emma."
Today was gray, windy and chilly here at almost sea level on the equator.
Sympathy/empathy weather?

#BirdsSeenIn2025, #Ecuador - the mystery bird is the Yellow-olive Flatbill (Tolmomyias sulphurescens)
I keep forgetting to add the Swallow-tailed Kite from May2025
October 15, 2025 at 5:07 PM
When out with new birders, I print numbered checklists and can say, 'Pearl Kite - 23' and say the number in Spanish. They find #23 and see its name in Spanish. All ducks are grouped under D (Teal, Pintails,Whistling Ducks) also doves under D.

This grouping might work for your website needs.

Does anyone else suffer from a birding hangover the day after Migratory Bird Day/October Big Day?! Ah, but it was worth the long hours in the field!

Hook-billed Kite, Cocoi, Anhinga, and one mystery bird. Can anyone help with its ID?

Guess how many seeds were in one of those small fruits?
People often ask how the birds survive during extended dry seasons. If the natural habitat is not disturbed, they have many options, like these tasty fruits and the tiny wild tomatoes that also thrive along the roadside.

(200 seeds!)

Exploring the remaining fragments of Western #Ecuador 's Tumbesian Region, I was captivated by the beauty of this well-behaved vine. iNaturalist provided identification: Passiflora-colinvauxii - endemic to Ecuador. A year later the flowers showed another facet. And now: the ripe fruits! #Manabi

I remember trying to identify a bird sound in western Ecuador. It was months before finally seeing the bird that made the sound. Years later w/a friend I heard one and said, 'Scale-crested Pygmy Tyrant,' and he asked, "Are you sure?"
I laughed, 'For sure!' and a minute later the bird appeared!
