To modern ears, it feels like a 50 year old song that was written about a wreck from decades earlier.
But the Edmund Fitzgerald sank in November 1975 and the song was recorded only a month later, and was released in August 1976, only 9 months after the ship went down.

Near as I can tell, the shortest distance across Canada, from Stanley Park in Vancouver to the Cape North Lighthouse at the tip of Cape Breton, is 6255 km.
This morning I just passed that distance with my cycling kilometres so far this year.
