Through an Indigenous-led lens, her analysis challenges the notion of reconciliation in the Canadian healthcare system, & calls for accountability and the restoration of birthing sovereignty.

The findings confirm persistent racism, lack of culturally-safe care, & widespread violations of their rights, including loss of bodily autonomy.

She notes that “despite national & international commitments to reconciliation & the recognition of Indigenous rights, the realities of the lived experiences of perinatal care in Canada show very little movement on these calls to action.”

Dr. Phillips-Beck analyzed the results of Indigenous respondents' information provided in the RESPCCT study. Indigenous parents in Canada continue to report experiences of systemic racism, disrespect, & violations of autonomy when interacting with the healthcare system during pregnancy & birth.
