Vella Lavella Monarch, one of Earth's last unphotographed birds, has finally been captured on camera:
Vella Lavella Monarch photographed for first time
Birders have achieved a major milestone with the first known photographs of Vella Lavella Monarch, captured in the Solomon Islands in July 2025. Until now one of the few bird species never documented alive, the monarch was photographed on Vella Lavella and nearby Ranongga. The breakthrough strengthens conservation focus on the region's unique avifauna.

Whilst we welcome Zitting Cisticola as a long-predicted colonist in the wake of climate change, we must also recognise that the arrival of such northern range edge species means that we are condemned to lose the likes of Willow Warbler, Ring Ouzel and Twite from the south
