Klein passed away this morning at 10 EST. He was comfortable, safe, and cuddled until the end. We’re totally devastated.

Klein was born into our family and lived a full life knowing nothing but love. It feels like an era of our lives is over now that he & Schmoopis are gone.

Today was tough, but it definitely helps to have the kittens around. I would really lose it if our house was now empty — but instead, we have two little ladies to love, care for, and laugh at.

Klein made it through the night. We weren’t sure he would. 99% of his time is spent sleeping or lying still with his eyes half closed, his breathing rapid and shallow. I slept on the couch near him.

We’re probably going to get in touch with an at-home euthanasia vet today and say our goodbyes.

Klein is home. Vet said next step would be to aspirate his enlarged spleen and biopsy bone marrow for cancer.

I couldn’t leave him alone and scared at the hospital while we wait ‘til Sunday when the sonographer is in. He may only have a handful of days left and I want him to be home with us. 💔

Klein update:

We took him to the ER vet last night around 10:30 - I couldn’t watch him gulp/gag and very obviously be in pain.

The vet couldn’t find anything stuck in his throat, no intestinal blockage, his labs are normal…

We decided to admit him to their hospital so he can be monitored.

There is a strip of trees on the horizon—deep brown and green with barely visible patches of orange, yellow, and crimson. The bright foliage of fall is past its prime and leaving the tree branches bare and black. The strip of trees separates the sky from the lake, which is exactly mirroring the light gray sky above, only the ripples of boats’ wakes disturb the lake’s surface. Framing the lake and sky is a dark, chaotic tangle of bare tree branches and bush overgrowth. Here and there are scattered some rust colored leaves, caught in the frenzy of twisting twigs, on their return to the dark, moist earth below.

Introduction Progress 11/13 Since we brought the kittens home Nov 3rd, they have lives upstairs in our spare room behind a tall baby gate and big piece of cardboard. We wanted to quarantine them for several days, since the rescue they came from had many cats with upper respiratory infections. Two days ago, Fiona figured out how to use the cardboard as a ramp to escape over the baby gate. She ran downstairs where Klein was lying peacefully on his favorite couch spot. Klein was shocked at her sudden appearance, but he tried to sniff at her curiously. Fiona was stressed and darting from here to there. Klein ended up going into the kitchen to hide under the table. We caught Fiona and put her back into their room upstairs. Last night we brought down Busy. Klein got up from his spot and followed her around as she sniffed everything. When she was done sniffing, she attempted to sniff Klein, who hissed at her softly and then moved away from her. This continued for a while until Klein had enough and took shelter in the kitchen again. There was no hair standing up or growling. Klein was not aggressive, he was avoidant. Prior to bringing down Busy, we tried to lure him upstairs with his favorite treat, but he had refused to take a step up the stairs. Thus far, he has been totally avoidant and ostrich like, pretending that they don’t exist and avoiding all contact. I suppose that’s better than hostility, but I am concerned that he’s too shy to get to know them.

Let’s check in on our main man, Klein! He is 1) clueless or 2) in denial about the kittens upstairs that gallop ‘round at all hours. He sleeps so much, usually from 10am to 6pm, & prefers to be a blob under a blanket most of the time. Still my handsome orange guy! 🧡
