Think indoor soccer. Then make it 5v5, switch the ball, change some rules, and amp up the speed. Now it's futsal, a game "born in Uruguay and raised in Brazil" per @jamiefahey.bsky.social. The first FIFA Women's Futsal World Cup is on now. My story for @theworld.org theworld.org/segments/202...

Sports in the Winter Olympics have to be contested on either snow or ice. It's actually a rule! Still, one of the sports gaining momentum to be added to the winter lineup doesn't have either.

XC!

Why add this muddy sport to the mix? My latest for @theworld.org:

3,000 athletes from 80 countries are in Tokyo now to compete in the 2025 Deaflympic Games. These Games predate the Paralympics by decades, yet the athletes receive far less funding and support than other athletes representing their nations. My latest for @theworld.org:

Nneka Ogwumike has been recognized as one of the best basketball players in the best league in the world ever since she stepped on the scene. But even that hasn't been enough for her to make an Olympic roster. Now, her final chance at the Games is over. @theworld.org

English rugby star Emily Scarratt announced her retirement this morning, just weeks after winning the World Cup. I spoke with Scaz back in August to hear about her journey from a farm to rugby's biggest stage -- and who she has inspired along the way. @theworld.org

The relationship between a conductor and an orchestra is key to the success of the performance. That's why it's such a big issue that the orchestra at Venice's La Fenice theater is refusing to accept the incoming conductor, Beatrice Venezi. My latest for @theworld.org: theworld.org/segments/202...

(3/4) Longboat competed for Canada at the 1908 Olympic Games, and was later inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. Today, his legacy lives on throughout the greater Toronto area -- and through his great-great-grandson, himself an impressive marathoner.

(2/4) But I'm reminded of a story I reported earlier this year about one of the Mohawk Institute's survivors. His name was Tom Longboat and he was forced to attend the school at age 12. He ended up running away. Years later, he became the first Indigenous person to win the Boston Marathon.

Experts say lenacapavir, an HIV prevention drug, is one of the biggest scientific breakthroughs in decades. Now, in record time, its got generic versions and will be just $40/year/person. A rare moment of celebration in global public health. My latest for @theworld.org: theworld.org/segments/202...

New mouth guards at the #WRWC2025 flash red if a player has potentially sustained a concussion. So far there have been 6 alerts, and 3 were unique (meaning there was no other indicator that a player needed to be evaluated). My latest for @theworld.org: theworld.org/segments/202...

What rhymes with "gone?" Chappell Roan's answer: Saskatchewan. She wrote the Canadian province into her new song. Now, Google Searches are way up for the province and its capital, Regina. City officials hope it'll lead to a real tourism boom -- or, at least, a concert. theworld.org/segments/202...

A tidbit that didn't make the story: Phil Pritchard, official keeper of the Stanley Cup, still has every pair of white gloves he has ever used to touch the Cup. They take up a ton of space at home. Wife doesn't love it. But one day, a grandkid is bound to. @theworld.org
