One implication is any shift to electricity moves us towards net zero. ICE cars are fuelled 100% by fossil fuels (petrol or diesel) and domestic central heating nearly always burns 'natural' gas i.e. methane. So EVs and heat pumps slash emissions.

In 2012, coal still generated 39% of the UK’s power. So getting to zero is very impressive. We have shifted from being a coal economy to one where wind is the largest source of electricity.
