We're looking forward to engaging further with the Commissioner over the coming months to progress these vital reforms—the need for which is amply illustrated in Better Renting's "We Live Here" book, filled with renters' photos of their homes.

An update from our Deputy CEO on the proposed minimum rental standards bill in South Australia: we're very disappointed in the results, but not defeated by them. An enormous thank-you to everyone who mobilised, contacted MPs, and shared our joint submission. We'll get there.

The SA Legislative Council will vote on minimum standards for rental homes tomorrow. If you care about renters, you know that minimum standards are a no-brainer: no other service that provides shelter to human beings for any extended period of time operates without standards for health/safety.

Heads up: you can still get an extra scoop of rental reforms if you donate to Better Renting before noon this coming Thursday! Ethical Jobs is very generously matching every donation made, up to $5000. If you've ever thought about donating and don't do it now, that's like throwing money away!

Findings are in: turns out Ethical Jobs is matching all donations to Better Renting this month! We want to create twice as much trouble for landlords who don't treat renting like the essential service it is next year, so doubling our donations is a huge help! Link is below 👇

🤔 Hmm...something strange seems to be happening with our donation site......it's almost like everything that goes into it is getting...doubled...no, it couldn't be—we'll have to investigate more tomorrow at 12PM to be sure! Stay tuned!

It’s so important for us to be able to show just how hot renters' homes get, either because they’re poorly-built and maintained, or because renters just can’t afford to cool them.

This project is generously supported by a grant from the City of Sydney.

In the latest effort to crack down on rent bidding, Victorian rental listings online now have to be advertised with one single, fixed price—no more calling up the agent to find out what the secret rent they're looking for you to offer is!

We know what the solutions are--we just need to see governments step up and act on them.

Anglicare recommends phasing out tax incentives to investors, renewing investment in social housing, and unifying a national code of renter protections to "begin to reverse the damage of decades of neglect."

They've also found that increases in supply, while important, haven't solved the affordability crisis, because that new supply still exists within the constraints of a housing market geared primarily at providing profit for investors, not an essential service for renters.

Regional rents provide little relief, with fewer than 1-3% of properties in many regional areas being affordable for an essential worker.
