For my two cents it’s all about trust. If you break the players trust then you have fucked up. It’s on you to fix it, not for the players to have to adapt, thus killing the pacing of a game.

This sort of adversarial behaviour between player and designer can be seen in old video games as well where you absolutely could be locked out of the main quest because you don’t have one particular item or skill. So now you have gamers refusing to play anything but the “Optimal Build”.
