The latter terms fall within the normal language of reporting and analysis. I don't have any of my style guides on hand, but come on, "enemy"?

Does the NYT routinely describe China and the US as enemies (as opposed to "adversaries," "rivals," etc.)? China is the USA's third-largest trading partner and the countries are not at war.

Then they put their fingers on the scale, suggesting that, even though US intelligence suggests there was no imminent threat -- that this was, in fact, an unprovoked attack by Israel -- alternatives to bombing are "hardly a sure thing"!

The authors have instead concocted their own binary -- diplomacy or bombing -- and, in the absence of any evidence that Trump views the conflict this way, rely on speculative counterfactuals to make bombing seem like a distinct possibility.

The central conceit of the article -- that Trump is considering dropping a bunker-buster bomb on Fordo -- is totally unsubstantiated. There's no evidence given that Trump is considering it. In fact the only reporting here on Trump's actual behavior suggests otherwise!

Can recommend seeing Florentina Holzinger's A Year without Summer directly after visiting the Angelus Novus exhibit on your 40th birthday.

Jia Zhanke's new film is terrific. Pure cinema, sui generis -- highly recommended.

A Swedish friend showed me this screenshot of a phone lock screen from two days ago, when every media company across the political spectrum was sending *push notifications* about this story. Unimaginable in US or Germany, where it immediately vanished.

This -- authorities questioning children alone at school -- was a common strategy used by Chinese officials to find Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims to put in concentration camps.

The U.S. State Dept. called China's persecution of Uyghurs a genocide.

Checked out Fox News and Fox Business this morning and it's a parallel universe. Minimal coverage of stock market, Pravda-like celebration of tariffs and quotes from "experts" like the "RedBalloon CEO" quoted in this headline. A huge swath of the country is not seeing the news you're seeing.

“The government’s actions undermine Thailand’s credibility on the international stage and as a member of the UN Human Rights Council."
