I cannot emphasise what a strong film THE DIRTIES is. It's glib to call it "Elephant but funny", and yet Matt Johnson and his collaborators made an extraordinarily powerful film about school shootings and the incel imagination. We should be talking about this film so much more than we currently do!

Few artists’ entire body of work have meant as much to me over the course of my life as Drew Struzan’s has. With his gift every movie felt epic & important whether the artwork was framed in the movie theater lobby or sitting on the video store shelf.

A screen grab of an article in which Bill Maher rebuts satirization of his Trump visit by declaring all references to Hitler by anyone but himself as evidence of his own comedic and philosophical supremacy. It should be noted that Maher is effectively co-opting what most online nazis mistakenly reference as “Godwin’s Law.” It should also be noted that Godwin’s actual “law” was merely that all online discourse will inevitably lead to a Hitler analogy, and that not only did Godwin never say that the introduction of the inevitable analogy was inherently invalid, but Godwin also quite explicitly clarified in 2017 that Hitler analogies ought not to be avoided. It should probably be noted that the reason Godwin felt compelled to clarify this is because of the rise of antisemitic, anti-immigration, anti-intellectual, anti-feminist, anti-gay, anti-academic, anti-science, isolationist nationalist conspiracist eugenicist views among a new generation of Americans attempting to repackage their clearly Nazi ideology as anything other than “Nazi ideology” and who were therefore big fans of incorrectly citing Godwin’s Law. It should also be noted that the reason Nazis don’t like being called Nazis is because the brand is currently still associated with 1. Genocide and 2. Getting the living shit kicked out of you. It should finally be noted that the Nazi strategy has always therefore been to lie and cheat and deny and whine and preen and take cowardly pot shots at whoever it perceives as weak, the whole time accusing all of humanity of doing those very things. Then, when they’re in power, they start dropping veils and start saluting. Then they say they didn’t salute and that everyone is being hateful and crazy. Which is why there are a lot of scenarios in which CONSTANTLY comparing what’s going on around you to historical timelines of fascist coups is the most rational thing to do and questioning that reaction is unhelpful at best and appeasement at worst
