I ended up buying and identical ASC 100, also used, from an eBay seller who only ever opened the box to look at it, for 30 bucks.

Also: Mute apparently lives *through closing the window and reloading it from a bookmark* -- and no, I didn't save the bookmark with mute enabled.

Just retested: clicking a new pane when in global mute does not unmute, even though it switches the audio focus; that's sort of a wart, I think. That's the thing that's my problem; either solution is fine...

Touch screens generally don't do Hover, which is what I suspect you're depending on there.
If it's possible to detect you're on one from JS, you could put a 3-dot menu in the corner of each pane...
