A standard part of the history we were taught in Quebec was about Les Filles du Roi, women sent from France to marry colonists in New France. I'll have to read this.

Hoffman is great, and a huge influence on the entirety of fantastic lit, among other things. His "detective" story Mme de Scudery predates Poe. Freud referred to him as "Uncanny", and he's the original Magic Realist.

Maupassant. I've read a bunch. Are there more than a few "weird" ones? The best I know are his realist works: novel Bel Ami and short story Boule de suif (sometimes translated Butterball, sometimes Ball of Fat). One of the great short story writers.

The film is wonderful, the acting superb. Unfortunately, the ending is changed from the original and undermines the story. Still very much worth watching.

This is a wonderful book. There's a newer translation available on Amazon, as well as a few other of his books, some of which were translated long before this. Seems to me he's also a big influence on Clark Ashton Smith.
