I have e just donated. It's such a terrible shame that hardly anyone has donated. I know there are lots of demands but all of us can afford a few pounds to help these desperate families.

These planted 'Community Forests' here are usually around 70- 80 percent native species and can be very good for wildlife if done well. They will take hundreds of years to be as rich as native forests though. Ecologist input is essential, but undervalued.

This is true. But the reasons are that these trees were planted very late in the season - late March and April, they didn't have time to establish roots to survive the very dry Spring and summer. Usual survivability is 70 -85 percent

Yes, I empathise John. It's hard. Two of my very best friends died in the last 2 years, both great naturalists and unique company. My life is so much poorer without them. But I was so fortunate to have them for so long.

I am an ex RSPB employee who worked for two decades on nature reserves and field research. I believe that they are a very effective bird conservation organisation. They have called for a gamebird release moratorium.

Avian flu: RSPB calls for a moratorium on gamebird and Mallard releases in the UK in 2025
We discuss the risk posed by governments across the UK by allowing the release of captive reared Mallards and gamebirds for shooting this year – given the ‘high’ levels of highly-pathogenic avian infl...

Yes. I remember doing casual bird surveys in East Lothian Woodlands and being bemused by the lack of SF in prime habitats. By Whiteadder Reservoir in the open hills a pair breed by the water in a comparatively young plantation of deciduous trees.

Absolute craven capitulation for no good reason at all. The edit was but a speck compared the horrors Trump has inflicted upon journalism.

Hi Kevin, I can't tell you how happy I am to see this post, I haven't seen Trevor in years and he looks so well 😊. He single handedly maintained all the North Kent Marshes RSPB buildings, I got to know him well at Elmley. A great naturalist and great company. Please pass on my regards
