Everyone’s talking about alternative response — but few are looking under the hood at how 911 dispatch actually works. My new piece with @barryfriedman1.bsky.social in @vitalcitynyc.bsky.social explores why the design of dispatch protocols matters so much.

Having just experienced my first empty-nester Halloween, with all that entails, I am of the view that there is a market for "Halloween baskets" - an assortment of candy like your kids would have brought home, had they been here collecting.

Super interesting comments by GOP Oklahoma Governor and head of NGA on deployment of Texas Guard in IL. I don't agree with it all, but there is real sanity here, itself in too short supply.

Weaponized drones for school shootings are moronic. The question I still have not heard answered? How do they fly through the classroom doors?

I could say more. I will in the book I've begun to write on public safety.
Company says high-tech drone system could make schools safer
Before most kids go back to school, one Texas-based company, called “Campus Guardian Angel,” is providing schools with demos of a new high-tech drone system it says can help save lives in school shoot...

This from #VanitaGupta is crucial reading about administration attacks on the not-for-profit sector.

For George Bush, it was 1,000 points of light. Apparently not so much right now. We've lost that charitable spirit that defines the United States.

Does it make sense to have 50 different state regulatory regimes for AI? No. Does it make sense for Congress to preempt them & put nothing in their place? No. Is this consistent with how American federalism should work? No. Should states be able to regulate law enforcement in their own states? Yes!

UVA President Jim Ryan being forced out of his job by USDOJ is a travesty.

This, I think, is the main point. The universal injunction issue is complicated. Always was. I look forward to seeing if this precedent holds when a Democrat is president.
If the Supreme Court thinks universal injunctions are unconstitutional, to wait until *now* to say that, in this of all cases, with this of all presidents, is a devastating indictment of both its impartiality and its prudence.
