the US is abandoning green energy at precisely the moment it is becoming not just a climate neccesity but also like a strategically important industry

this has to be some LaRouche business right

insane reversal of responsibility, by which I mean it makes the proper *separation* of responsibility (the professor to provide something to read, the student to read it) impossible. why does everyone want guarantees for everything.

not sure how common this is but in the last class I TA'd I was told specifically *not* to give back line-by-line edits on exam questions bc 1) students could pass them on/share them to metagame "correct" answers 2) not all the TAs had time or wanted to do them, so it would create a mimetic gradient

it's a fractal confluence of things that already wrong with academia – arbitrarily open-ended "personal essays" that functions as gifts of the student's Self rather than focal points of external engagement make this kind of thing almost inevitable, as does the disappearance of close writing feedback

right, and tbf one of the challenges here is differentiating "the way they have been since the dawn of time (Bush administration)" and "the way they openly are now"!

anyway if this was about Stancil claiming he could fix everything by writing an article I'd be more sympathetic – then he'd be writing the article, and thinking about how to disseminate it, instead of complaining about what *other* people write.

I'm not saying there are no barriers to adequate dissemination of the information! the average person I talk to IRL has probably never seen this post. (I'm in Canada but that probably moves that average *up*.) I'm trying to distinguish this from "the media's job is to ensure the emotional reaction"

there's also a specific online structure of feeling here that "dignity = taking an L", which you also see in Trump himself, the reaction to that Shen bike comic, incels etc. I've known people who basically ruin their own lives by believing that IRL

"but screaming is an appropriate emotional reaction to fascism" yes and if your audience has their moral compass intact they will have it, and *still* resent you for trying to add *your* scream to theirs. the point isn't stiff upper lip repression but the distinction btwn public and private spheres

I know I'm harping on the metaphor here but I think it's important as usual – when the media's obligation to alert the public gets conflated with "emotional catharsis for the media class", not only does it tend to alienate the public, it means to avoid that you have to *avoid* telling certain truths
