“I wish we had horses,” Jimin says, squeezing in tight. Jungkook snorts next to him. He’s warm, at least. Jimin wishes he could press in even closer, but the only other place to go is directly into his lap. Though if it gets any colder, Jimin might have to chance it. “And I wish I had a thousand gold sovereigns.” Jimin nudges his shoulder, then regrets it when he sways away and the cold seeps in. “Come on. It’s not that impossible.” “Cost about the same,” Jungkook says, shuffling in close again. Jimin feeds another log to the fire and wrinkles his nose. “No it doesn’t.” “Maybe not back east. Out here it does. I haven’t known anyone with a horse since…” He trails off, thinking, and Jimin feels it when he shakes his head. “Ages. They’re more trouble than they’re worth.” Jimin wrinkles his nose. “I had one.” “You had a horse.” “Yeah. When I left.” He can feel Jungkook go still next to him. “Really?” The tone of his voice shifts. Jimin nods. “Yeah. For a little while.” “What happened?” He shrugs, throat tightening. “Bandits. It was my fault. Took a bad road.” They had all been bad roads, really. But he’d been stupid about it. He squeezes his eyes shut against the memory.

#wipwednesday from chapter 2 of my @kmcovenfest.bsky.social fic, which will be dropping just as soon as I finish edits (so hopefully next week)
Jimin had honestly been thinking of Jungkook when he’d made his offer—his bruised face, his wariness, the trouble a lone traveler might run into on the roads—but by the end of the first day he has to admit he’s also grateful for the companionship. The road is long and lonely and he’s out of practice keeping company, but he appreciates it all the same. It feels less like striking blindly into the unknown with someone at his side—even if they’re both bundled up to their ears against the wind, which whistles too loud to hear each other speak. To simply look over and see Jungkook trudging along next to him is a relief, despite their struggling silence. Though it’s not as much of a relief as the crossroads inn that appears a little before sunset, just as the snow starts to pick up, thick enough to hide everything more than an arm’s length in front of them. Jungkook groans loud enough to hear over the gale. “Thank the Goddess,” he says, picking up his pace. He’s quick despite his injuries, and Jimin is left slogging after him, nearly slipping on a patch of ice. The inn is smaller than the one they’ve left behind, a narrow two-story affair across the road from a boarded-up building that might have once been a general store and a weather-worn mail stop that’s seen far better days. All three structures are still and dark beneath the winter-stripped trees. It doesn’t look like they’ve had visitors for some time. There’s no one in the taproom when they shuffle in, stomping snow from their boots and brushing it from their hoods. The inside is barely any warmer than the outside. Jimin checks behind the dusty bar and hallos the kitchen for good measure, but there’s no response. Whoever used to be here, they’re long gone by now, swept away by the winter.

"Jungkook-ah?" Yoongi looks at him, concern written across his face. "I've got work," he says. "Tomorrow. My new job. I can't— I have to be there." Jungkook doesn't let himself think about how the countercharm was supposed to help, how he'd been worried about exactly this, about something happening to him before he could start the job. He's alright. He's safe. They helped him. He's awake now. He hasn't missed it. "Okay," Yoongi says, a little rough, and he slides out of bed. Jungkook watches him, worried something has changed—that Yoongi doesn't want to be here with the reminder of everything going wrong—but Yoongi holds a hand out. His expression is a little uncertain around the edges, and Jungkook is a little uncertain back. "Hyung?" "Can't start a job on an empty stomach." He wiggles his fingers a little. "Hyung'll cook." Which is how he finds himself seated at the big table in the kitchen, watching Yoongi putter about the stove in his slouching cardigan and house slippers. He has a cup of tea-he'd gotten to watch Yoongi mix it, pinches of leaves and coiling steam and a careful breath, lips pursed like a kiss. Now he sits with his toes tucked into the creases of his knees and sips it slowly, sweet and sharp and soothing.

18. deleted scene (if you keep them)

I have a massive 27k doc for all the stuff I've cut from my work. I tend to go through and delete stuff for wips once they're posted, but here's an alternate version of jungkook's introduction from homecoming (ao3.org/works/50424751)
He’s broad, sturdy and tall, but young—maybe even younger than Jimin. He smells like he’s come from the forest, earthen and wintery and a little musky, enough that Jimin can’t quite pick out his natural scent. Jimin growls, soft and low in his throat, less threat and more warning, and the wolf takes a step back, his wide, dark eyes going even wider. It gives him a doe-like look, soft and surprised, and Jimin’s growl fades. For a moment, they stare at each other, neither moving. Then the boy takes in a deep breath, nostrils flaring, and swallows. “Sorry,” he says, surprisingly quiet. “I smelled— Who are you?” “Jimin,” says Jimin. “Who are you?” “Yah, Jungkook-ah,” comes an unfamiliar voice from out in the hall, and the boy twists around, which answers that question. Jungkook. Right. The youngest one, the one who’s been away on a trip into town. The one whose room Jimin is in. No wonder he couldn’t smell him—Jimin has been drenched in his scent for days.

“Here,” he said, depositing Jungkook in a plush wing-back chair near the door. Jungkook sat obediently. The breeze stirred his hair into his face, and Jimin reached out to brush it back. His touch was as light as the breeze itself, and like the breeze, it made Jungkook shiver. “Sorry,” he said, tongue thick in his mouth. “That’s alright.” Jimin didn’t seem to need him to explain what he was sorry for. He only touched his shoulder and leaned in close and said, “Would you like some tea?” “Um,” said Jungkook. “I’ll bring you some tea,” he decided.

real bummer of a weekend but I did spend most of it packing for a move and doing schoolwork (if we're counting academic writing I'm well over 1k). all in all a shockingly productive week! easily the most I've written in months; this tracker has been great for motivation!

Jungkook wanders over as he’s checking the state of the scabbard—frostnipped and road worn, much like Jimin himself, but still in decent condition—and asks, almost tentative, “Do you fight?” Jimin glances up. “Yes,” he says mildly. “Though only when I can’t avoid it. Why?” “I just thought you might carry it to discourage people from bothering you.” “Does it discourage you?” Jimin can’t help but ask, and Jungkook nods rapidly, hair falling in his face. Jimin squashes the urge to reach out and fix it. “That’s part of it, I suppose.” The best fight, his tutors always said—and Jimin holds with their teaching—is the one that doesn’t need to be fought, and a sturdy blade wielded comfortably can go a long way to heading things off before they begin. Sometimes, though, avoidance isn’t an option. “But that doesn’t mean I can’t use it.” “It’s very…” Jungkook pauses. “Is it wrong to call a sword pretty? I feel like they’re always strong or mighty or something like that.” “It can be pretty,” Jimin tells him. He’s always preferred elegant himself, but he can’t deny there’s something pretty about the smooth, simple lines of the blade and the faint swirling pattern etched into the metal. “Would you like to hold it?” Jungkook’s eyes go wide. “Can I?” “Just don’t go swinging it around too much,” Jimin says, rising and flipping the sword around hilt first. Jungkook stares at him for a moment, then closes a hand around the leather-wrapped grip. Jimin waits a moment, just to be certain he has it comfortably in hand, and then lets go.
