A crowd was enjoying the #Warmth of this sunny June evening on the banks of the Seine in #Paris, when…

Note: this was in 2023; swimming in the Seine was forbidden at the time.

For #FossilFriday, one more look at Cryptolithus bellulus, a 440 million year old trilobite reconstructed in bronze. She can be disassembled to view her digestive tract and exopods/gills. Sound on for all the satisfying clicks, particularly as she’s reassembled ⚡️🧲 #sciart

Here's a hint, not quite a spoiler. Somebody who is expert - in both biking and particularly in mathematical physics - described this problem to me a few years ago, and my understanding is that there are plenty of interesting open questions that roll from it.

How to deal with your conservative relatives at Thanksgiving:
- keep to non controversial topics, like who should own the means of production
- focus on common ground, like how left communism is an infantile disorder
- remind them that Stalin was trapped in a game of realpolitik, and had few options

“Under the present brutal and primitive conditions on this planet, every person you meet should be regarded as one of the walking wounded. we have never seen a man or woman not slightly deranged by either anxiety or grief. we have never seen a totally sane human being."

"Assume everyone I interact with online is struggling with their mental health" has only become a more important guiding principle in the past couple years
My personal guidelines for dealing with people on social media:

Assume everyone is a friend you haven't yet gotten to know.
Assume everyone is struggling with their mental health
Don't promise any emotional labor you might not be able to provide
If someone seems like a hater, disengage right away

Imagine if instead of the north Pacific there was an entire busy continent linking Asia to North America. Imagine if it was mandatory that *some* pair of countries on Earth would have to be a handful of miles apart, or even share a land border, but observe different calendar days

St Peter: You studied Newtonian gravity, right?

Me: Umm, a bit.

SP: Explain to me, like I’m 5, why the ratio of polar gravity to equatorial for a uniform oblate spheroid is approximately 1 + 1/5 the ellipticity of the meridians.

Me: You let Isaac set the questions, didn’t you?
