The real reason may be that there was no evidence of drug trafficking and they didnt want any survivors to tell the story.

Trump says he’s defending the homeland from drugs while he pardons and gives residency to some of the most notorious drug traffickers. I think he just wants a bigger cut of the profits.

I think not. It doesn’t “withstand” the internal explosion at all, just compresses the radioactive material inward to increase its density for fission (which can trigger fusion and more fission). There have been “broken arrow“ incidents with nuclear warheads before that did release radioactivity.
