Now i wonder if there is any information science research on the effect of (chronic) hyper-vigilance on satisficing and sense-making

That’s not at all what I’m saying, and also we could have been having some of this while simultaneously being subject to a catastrophic change.

I’m wondering what the baseline is, and how we would know this hasn’t happened to some extent already to some populations.

I wonder if this has not already been the case for a half century or so.

They are definitely structure-deferential, which in complex systems is *usually* a good idea (Chesterton’s fence and cascading failures and all that).

But at this point, we really do know a lot about the systems that software is embedded in.

Agile tries to make knowledge and constraints legible, but it *thinks* it’s making power visible.

And then having given away the ability to say no because saying no is not normalised, we have devs complaining about layoffs and exploitation.

C’mon people.

It would be pretty great if the profession could recognise that it is facing a collective action problem. I’ve had this conversation with engineers before and it’s interesting how the first solutions are always tool and practices which of course only displace the symptoms elsewhere.

Isn’t it worse than that, because the “should” is simply what is present more often, and is repeated more? Which is hugely influenced by the mechanics of text generation and storage - which is just a reflection of economics and population size of the text-producing class?

I remain convinced that there is an alternate history where indigenous North Americans domesticated raccoons before Europeans got here

It’s what happens when I use the phone.

I mean, who needs to know who has sent me messages? It’s a bad habit, I should just stop talking to people.
