A stunning special edition hardback of Estella’s Revenge is available!

✨🖤✨My name is Estella; it means “star”. I was named in the hope I would be a light to guide my adoptive mother out of the emotional blackness that enveloped her. Instead, I have become something far darker than any night.✨🖤✨

“As a patchy reader of historical crime fiction, I am thrilled to say that I loved this one [Estella's Revenge], and it has earnt its place in the bookcase devoted to books I will read again. There’s no higher praise that that. Highly recommended.“ Thank you @ravencrime.bsky.social

After a few days away, I’m back home & hitting the ground running with a Zoom interview. Then I’ll get cracking on writing my seventh psychological thriller, & editing my second gothic historical thriller (the second in the Estella series). What a great way to start the week!

I was away recently, and stayed in the most wonderful place in Northumberland, surrounded by trees, a river, and nature. Every night I went to sleep to the call of a tawny owl - and was woken the same way every morning. So this drawing is in honour of that bird.

Last night I stood outside in the darkness, staring at the INCREDIBLY bright stars and crescent moon. Amazing. Humbling. Joyful. I’m so grateful to be here on this writing break in Northumberland.

A tawny owl flies across a full moon, and for the briefest of moments you lock eyes.

I'm an author, but also an artist. Drawing wildlife is my speciality. This box is going to its new home today. If you love it, I am currently open for commissions! ✨💕✨

The perfect reaction! It's out now in all formats - the paperback was published last month. I can't decide which cover colours I love the most!

Did you know in early Victorian Manchester the average life expectancy was just 17?

I’m reading Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist alongside The Real Oliver Twist, by John Waller. Dickens was inspired by the life story of Robert Blincoe, who entered the workhouse aged 4, & worked in a factory from 7.

This is what I did with my day. What did you do?
I’m a bit hare obsessed. Love drawing them under a moonlit sky... Usually I'm too busy writing books to do much drawing, so today was fun!

Ah, the glamorous life of a writer! Here’s me first thing this morning, in my Oodie, hair scraped back, hunched over my kindle as I proofread Estella.

Proofreading Estella, my gothic historical thriller inspired by Great Expectations. Finally reading my book as a reader will is so exciting!

Seeing the dedication to nan felt v special, too. She was like another parent to me.

The poem sums up the Victorian attitude towards women...

Stumbled across this abandoned church. Trapped between a river and the sea, sitting on marsh and sand dunes, its isolation reminded me of the opening scene of Great Expectations.

Happy anniversary! We’ve been through a lot in our 14 years together, including the passing away of Paul’s dad just ten days after our first date. We couldn’t approach everything from more opposite perspectives but that just means we meet in the middle. Love you more than ever!

I'm quite pleased with this pen and ink sketch I've done of a hare beneath the moon. It's a card for P, for our anniversary tomorrow (he isn't on here!). The hare is beneath a New Moon as today is a new moon 🌙).
Hopefully he likes it when I give it to him 🤞

Well, this is a lovely thing to see! The Darkest Lies is a twisted tale of a mum trying to discover who put her daughter into a coma - as villagers she's known her whole life try to hide the truth... And currently it's No 26 in Psychological ebooks on Kobo!

Everything I need for Monday motivation!
After years of working to my own schedule it’s odd but good to have publishing deadlines. Working alone gave me the luxury of experimentation. Working with others motivates me to stretch myself. I'm learning I'm more capable than I give myself credit for.

✨What are you reading this weekend?✨

My read is Upon a Frosted Star, by M. A. Kuzniar. It's an adult fairytale, inspired by The Great Gatsby and Swan Lake. I'm hoping for a The Night Circus vibe 🤞

PS - I’m in love with this Kate Bush table at my local indie bookshop! I want one!

The other day I felt quite sad while reading The Bookseller's article: Frankfurt 2023: Agents' Hotlists about books agencies are backing to fly at Frankfurt.
'Good luck to them. Wish that was me,' I sighed, and stopped reading.
Imagine my surprise this morning when I came across my book on the list!

Scamp is summing up today’s vibe. Stay cosy on this grey day! I’m struggling to make my brain work today and have a lot of murderous plotting to do…

I found this gem of a book, published in 1839, the other day. Peter Parley’s Works: Tales About Great Britain is a brilliant snapshot of Britain during the years my gothic thriller, Estella’s Expectations, is set. Reading it is like stepping back in time.

I’ve got bad habits as a writer, sometimes. Working in bed when up against a deadline is one. Celebrating sending the line edits to my editor by having a glass of wine is probably another but…feck it! Here’s to a great weekend 🍷 ♥️📕
