Hell, this is probably the best thing to happen to the Green Party since Zack Polanski.
Pass the popcorn.

Whether Your Party becomes a real political force or the world’s 1st fully functional circular firing squad remains to be seen, but there’s nowt like watching a movement built on collective action split into 17 rival micro-movements, each convinced they're the true guardians of the revolution.

Expect an ambitious mix of “things we feel strongly about”, “things we haven’t costed yet”, and “things we’ll definitely all fall out over again by Tuesday”. Calls for unity may be met by endless amendments, appeals for solidarity may be subjected to multiple points of order.

Actually running the show will apparently be handed to a bunch of inexperienced idealists whose thinking has yet to make hostile contact with political sobriety.
That should produce an interesting policy platform.

It's a democratic commitment that extends to the leadership too; anyone who has any experience of realpolitik - serving MPs or councillors for instance - is barred from holding office, whilst simultaneously being a member of another political party altogether is not a problem.

At least they agreed democratically on the name, with members voting by 51.6% to 48.6% (Grauniad) in favour of keeping the “temporary” name - a total turnout it would seem, of 100.2%. You can't get more democratic than letting the nightwatchman, his Alsatian and her three pups all have a vote...

It's a generous statement coming from possibly the 1st political party leader in history to be defenestrated by its membership before it officially existed. Jeremy realises the scale of the task ahead, advocating for peace in Palestine, Ukraine, Sudan, Congo, and also presumably in North London.

Only a political movement with a truly broad church can afford to start by ex-communicating half of the congregation.
Nonetheless would-be leader Corbyn (remember him?) is adamant that it's "important that we all absolutely work together", where the "we" clearly means "those of us who are left".

If #Labour wants to prove it’s better than Reform, it could start by trying to be less cruel and stupid than them. Clear the backlog, let people work, and stop using bureaucracy as a substitute for policy. Stop being performative and start actually performing.

...is the definition of insanity. #Mahmood's plan doesn’t reduce numbers; it multiplies paperwork. It doesn’t create “security”; it creates precarity. It doesn’t fix the system; it feeds it more bodies to grind through. It’s not immigration control, it's performative lunacy.

In 2023 the HO made c.74,000 initial decisions on asylum. This plan would create around that many extra reviews every year. That’s building a whole 2nd system on top of the broken one and pretending it's been mended. Doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different outcome...

And if the HO can’t cope now, how will it cope with that exponential increase? The crises that force people to flee are rarely resolved quickly, so we'll just end up with an even more swollen inefficient bureaucracy, struggling under a permanently increasing rolling backlog.

But of course the big problem with that is the uncertainty imposed by reassessing asylum rights every 2.5 years. That's a handicap to employability, to integration and planning, even to getting a bank account your wages can be paid into. It's not sanctuary, it's state-imposed instability.

FACT. #UK #immigrants are more likely to be in work than UK natives: that's the opposite to Denmark. So give #asylumseekers the right to work. Let them support themselves, pay tax, pay NI, and contribute to society. Forcing people to be idle and then complaining about the cost is ridiculous.
