It's not new, of course, but I feel like earlier it was mostly something negative, often a metaphor for totalitarianism (cf. the Borg), while now I see it presented more positively. Some explanations I can think of: 1) the political discredit of the "rugged individual" myth;

I keep finding this trope of the alien hive mind in recent SF novels by A. Tchaikovsky, A. Martine, E. Ashton, etc. If you have observed this as well, I'd be very interested to know why you think that might be or, at least, what other recent cultural developments you think it might be connected to.
