Here's the thing, also. If you give students interesting writing challenges that require them to do the human work of writing, believe it or not, they will come to enjoy and respect what writing means. That schools haven't inculcated these attitudes is a shame, but it's fixable.
Large language models have near-zero utility when it comes to helping students develop as writers. I say this because of what I value in the writing experience: thinking, feeling, human exchange and communication with readers. With limited time for personal reading, the list of books I read this year was ok. Reading ‘Martyr’ while listening to ‘Rebel Girl’ brought up a lot memories of art school.

The most effective editing move is still the one I stole from George Saunders: read your draft over and over and over again, out loud, until you have to fix the bad parts because you will literally die if you have to read them more time
