Incidentally, here are MF starts in the US. 1300 ft/unit on average in the housing boom days, higher than a typical German unit.

Take this building. Yes, it’s a scissor stair, but you can expand that out to the full double staircase and that’s not really going to change the picture.

The IM Pei designed silver tower floor plans look like this for instance. More 2-3 beds than one bed. Two back to back stairs, you could save a little bit of floor space there, but can’t take back any more hallway space.

Double stars even allow for inner courtyards! I grew up here in Minnesota. Spent a bunch of time playing with other kids in the centers of these units.
