what's funny is that I think lives caused more problems in 3D Sonic because the ranking systems already give you big incentives to beat full stages without dying, but then they made restarting cost a life for some fucking reason so it just became more tedious

rewarding earlier success with more leeway on later challenges is actually really satisfying IMO and it makes replaying the earlier parts of the game/mode way more fun because improvement at them matters

I remember when I finally beat F-Zero GX's hardest cup on the highest difficulty it was because I pulled enough of a lead in points after the first four tracks that I just drove Phantom Road like a grandma and never boosted at all and came in like 17th and still won the cup

there was definitely an era where people would say that Super Meat Boy & N++ having small levels with infinite instant retries was The Correct Way to make difficult platformers and that any way these games used to work previously was wasting your time in comparison
