We are definitely going to be on the wrong side of history with this.

We are a country that said NO to Apartheid era South Africa.

We said NO to nukes.

But condemnation of the genocide in Gaza? That's just too much for our coalition govt.

Shame on them.
New Zealand prevaricates on whether to recognise Palestine as a state, or not.

NZ has now paid 120% of the full cost of 2 next generation, hybrid ferries for *checks notes* nothing at all. Those ferries were on track for 2025 & 2026 delivery.

Extra points: our only rail enabled ferry is being retired on Monday & maintenance costs have doubled

Should be sackable

Finally some precise numbers for the Blatten deposit! 👇
11 Mio m3 and up to 32 m thick ! 😱
I also derived a new elevation model from the aerial images, allowing me to visualize the elevation change in the affected areas.
The rocks and debris in the valley are locally up to 32m thick and I estimate the total displaced volume is about 11 million cubic meters. #Blatten

Awesome find!

The village of Blatten in Switzerland is partly buried by the collapse of a glacier which melted because our greenhouse gas emissions warmed the climate.

Another reminder that choosing to not invest enough today to reduce emissions means far greater costs for society in the long term.

Here's Temblor's analysis of the M6.2 earthquake that struck the Marmara Fault near Istanbul. This quake was felt by a city of nearly 16 million people, but thankfully, the fault itself lies 15 km south of the city. Read more, in our latest, by Stein and Sevilgen.

🚨Remember🚨
NEVER try to drive through flood waters - most deaths from floods are vehicle related.
You’re also risking others lives and property 😞
Don’t walk, swim or play in flood waters - assume they are contaminated (human and/or animal sewerage, chemicals) or electrically charged.
Stay safe ❤️

Cool. Thanks Max
Very sad to see the damage from the earthquake in Myanmar. My thoughts are with all affected by this disaster.

Understanding where and how much the fault slipped can help with damage assessments, so we've made some preliminary estimates from S2 (data: doi.org/10.5281/zeno...)

🟧Severe Weather Update🟧

Heavy rain and blustery northerly winds are on the way!

The largest accumulations are forecast for the northwest of the South Island where 350-450mm of rain is forecast. This area could still be upgraded to a Red Warning.
