I don’t see how people read this book as an “allegory about fascism.” It is literally about life under fascism. Everybody is talking about Hitler. Main characters can’t speak. Leftists and liberals are beaten up and jailed and killed in the streets.

I can’t seem to find a common thread. It’s not like someone is going to pick up _The Shipping News_ and say “oh golly I didn’t mean to read a _novel_, I wanted to read some news about shipping.”
