lived enough places (ORD, BOS, AUS, DTO, ARB, SJC, NRT, LHR, OAK, SFO) for my accent to get terribly confused; now back at the end of the Ravenswood line

I suppose it reduces to "will the show vote both mobilize the base and also engage low-info/low-participation voters" - and if I had a decent insight into that I'd ride the consultant gravy train until the end of time
it seems like "grind congress to a standstill" doesn't affect opinions much

IMO, the Dem gerontocracy still doesn't recognize why it lost the presidential election and that mealy centrism doesn't work in the face of "things are obviously, terribly wrong and people are not being held to account" (viz bsky.app/profile/elad... )
New piece.

A long deep dive piece into the reasons beyond the punditry and headlines as to why Harris and Democrats as a whole failed in 2024.

I firmly believe this is about far more existential, psychological, and structural reasons than it has been depicted as. Here’s why.
The Deeper Reasons Democrats Lost
It wasn't just that Trump got more votes. It wasn't just that Harris had lower turnout. A deep dive into the psychological, existential, and systemic reasons Harris and Democrats didn't win in 2024.

it beeps on power-on! reset works! screen's full of garbage! so it's at least moderately functional
(there are also lots of rabbit holes for "what is the best way to replace 4116s, as even the NOS only seem to get worse and worse")
November 25, 2025 at 4:16 PM
no; I need to figure out whether the 4116s are bad or if it's the TTL that's hosed, alas

Big Jim Thompson was Republican! So was Jim Edgar, and both were active into the 90s - but they were emblematic of an earlier time, before the rise and utter predominance of Reagan and the New Right. If folks mean the Rockefeller Republicans, that's a way more accurate label than "90s GOP"
November 18, 2025 at 7:58 PM
wtf do they even mean by "90s Republicans"? because when I think of them, Newt Gingrich is who immediately springs to mind

one of the worst aspects of both dns and bgp is that they *look* simple, and Engineer Brain thinks "of course I know how all this works in practice!"

I'd almost be willing to put money on the so-called reviewer just running the paper through an LLM and asking for an academic review

I'm struck by how many (seemingly) independent groups of people have been echoing that sentiment - although likening post Civil War to the Cold War hasn't caught on terribly widely thus far

only in the past five-ten years or so has the hardware been available to fully image floppies (8", 5.25", 3") at the magnetic flux level; some of the copy protections from the 1980s are still difficult to consistently image accurately. (the plethora of archival formats doesn't help, either)
